Guide: Best Alternatives to Google Chrome Omnibox
Omnibox is one of the most used features in Chrome. How many times in a day to press CTRL + L (that’s the shortcut to focus on Omnibox, by the way, if you didn’t know). But sometimes you have to change. And a change is GOOD. So I searched the Chrome Web Store to find an extension that can replace Omnibox. And I found 2. Much smarter than Omnibox. These extensions will not replace Omnibox, but will actually replace your New Tab page. So if you use any other extension for new tab page it will be replaced.
1. Fauxbar
Fauxbar is not only a smart alternative to Omnibox, but it also brings Firefox’s Awesome Bar feature to Chrome. Since Chrome has omnibox for search, Firefox has something called Awesome Bar for search. So if you’ve used Firefox Awesome Bar, you should know that you can search anything you’ve saved (including history, bookmarks, and plugins). It also has an algorithm to show you search results of your locally stored data. You can get all of that in Chrome with Fauxbar. So let’s get into it and see what makes it smart.
The new tab page has been replaced
So this new tab page will be replaced with the Fauxbar UI. This means you will get the Firefox style search function (aka Awesome bar) at the top and your most used website as thumbnails at the bottom. You can also switch between Chrome apps. Just find whatever you want now. You also get results from your history and bookmarks.
Shortcuts
I cannot live without shortcuts. With every software or application I use, I first look for the available shortcuts. Starting from the search bar. There are keywords that allow you to access and search your favorite search engine. For example, type ‘g’ and press the space bar. It lets you search on Google. You get the settings for that in Options> Search engines.
You can also customize other keyboard shortcuts in Chrome’s Shortcuts section for extensions.
The main menu
The top menu of the extension page gives you quick access to bookmarks and extensions, and you can browse open tabs. In the extensions menu, you also get the option to disable extensions. This allows you to quickly disable and enable the extension when needed.
Modifications
You also have customization options to make the New Tab page look cooler. You can add fonts, change their size and color, and add page backgrounds. You can also customize the menu bar to add / remove specific menus. Fauxbar is one of the best alternatives to Omnibox. Yes, you can set a custom search engine for bookmarks and history, but it won’t show real-time results like Fauxbar does. Now there is another simple tool made especially for bookmark searching.
2. Bookmarks suggestion
Wait, how can this be an alternative to Omnibox? Well, Bookmarks Suggestor replaces Omnibox’s Ctrl + L shortcut with its own search engine. In this search engine, you can quickly search for bookmarks and open them by pressing Enter or ‘+’ to open them in a new tab. If the search results don’t match, you can press Enter to search for them on Google (which opens in a new tab). You can use this CTRL + L keyboard shortcut on any page and the search engine will run over the page. Press CTRL + L again and it will disappear. It’s also one of the quick ways to search Google from your current tab. READ ALSO: How to Make the most of Chrome’s new bookmarks manager (en How to Switch back to the old)
