Google has turned Meet from a platform just for business meetings into a playground for face-to-face calls. When Google first made Meet available to anyone with a free Google account, it was in light of the pandemic. And without a doubt, Google has delivered solid performance to users all over the world. Soon, the popularity of Meet reached great heights. Since then, Google has switched to personal accounts, with more and more features available on free accounts. There’s even speculation that Meet could replace Duo, as the company may be planning to shelve it. What feels like another step in that direction is that Google has now introduced filters, AR masks, and Duo-like effects. mobile app, AR filters and masks are only available for personal accounts, i.e. accounts with the domain “gmail.com”. For Google Workspace accounts, the only effects available are the previously existing Blur and Replace Background effects. And that fits, because you don’t really need these effects in a professional setting. The new filters and effects are only available on iOS and Android mobile applications. Whether or not they will be available on Google Meet for Web remains to be seen as Google has not made any announcements or even a hint about it.
