Guide: Scheduling Posts on Instagram: Tips and Tutorial

It is a proven fact that timing plays a critical role in achieving success on social media. Whether it is Facebook or Instagram; it’s always good practice to post when your followers are most active. But sometimes the odd hours can make it a bit difficult to keep up up with the booking schedule. Hence, you should use a tool to help you schedule your Instagram posts in advance. And that’s what we’ll be looking at in this article. So let’s jump right in and see how to schedule Instagram posts.

Convert your Instagram account to a business profile

But before we start scheduling posts, there is one thing you should know. The planning feature is only available for business Instagram profiles. So you need to convert your account to a business profile first if you don’t already have one. Here’s How to do that: Step 1: Go to the Profile tab on your Instagram account and tap the menu button in the upper right corner.

Step 2: Tap the Settings option at the bottom of the menu, then tap the Account option on the next window.

Step 3: Here, tap on the Switch to Business Account option and tap Continue until you reach the Connect to Facebook page.

Step 4: For this to work, you need a Facebook page. So if you don’t, make one and link it to your Instagram account in this step.

Step 5: Check your details in the next step and tap Done.

And with that, your account should now be converted to a business profile. However, you still won’t find scheduling options in the app. Well, the thing is, Instagram just turned on scheduling feature in its API, so you can’t schedule posts using just the app. You need a third-party app or software to schedule your messages. I’ll be using Buffer for this article, but there are many other free and paid tools such as Hootsuite, Socialbu, Autogrammer, etc. that you can use instead.

How to Schedule Instagram posts with Buffer

Before you can start scheduling posts, you need to add your Instagram account to Buffer and then set it up up Direct planning.

Add your Instagram account to Buffer and Set Up Direct planning

Step 1: Go to the Buffer website and create an account.

Step 2: Link your Instagram account to the platform by clicking on Add a New Social Account button

Step 3: Select the Instagram option on the next page to link your Instagram account.

Step 4: Enter your Instagram credentials on the next page and click Login. Then click on the green Authorize button to allow Buffer to access your Instagram profile.

Step 5: After linking your Instagram account, click Go to dashboard.

Step 6: Then you need to set up Direct Scheduling so Buffer can post automatically on your behalf. Just click Yes on the following web page and you will be redirected to a Facebook authentication page.

Step 7: Click Continue and Authenticate with Facebook, then enter your Facebook credentials.

Step 8: Allow Buffer to post to Instagram by clicking OK at the next prompt.

With that, you are now all set to schedule messages with Buffer. So let’s quickly discuss that.

And finally, schedule Instagram posts

Step 1: Click on a date and time you want to schedule a message.

Step 2: On the next page, add the image you want to share and write a caption for the post.

Step 3: Click Edit to adjust the date or time the post will be published.

Step 4: Once everything is done, click on the Schedule Post button and you’re done.

Buffer will now automatically publish the post to your feed at the predefined time. However, there are some limitations. The direct planning feature only works for single image posts that are within the acceptable range of Instagram’s aspect ratio. If you use the feature To publish multiple images within a single post, photos with a different aspect ratio, or to attempt to publish to a personal account, Buffer will not publish the posts directly. Instead, it will send you a reminder on the specified date and time. The reminder will direct you to the Instagram app, where you will need to manually publish the post. So make sure to stick to the tool’s guidelines. With the free version of Buffer you can add one profile per platform, up up to three profiles. You can only have ten scheduled posts at any one time, but there is no limit on the number of posts you can schedule in a month. If you want more features, you can try one of the paid plans in the free trial period. The paid plans not only lift these restrictions, but also provide some additional benefits such as in-depth analytics and video / GIF support.

Start planning your Instagram posts

So now that you know how to schedule Instagram posts, what are you waiting for? Switch to a corporate account and start planning right away. Keep in mind that Buffer isn’t the only tool you can use for this purpose, and you can always try other options that provide similar functionality. The next up If you use both Facebook and Instagram regularly, read the following article to learn how to post on both platforms at the same time.
